What’s Inspiring Us – 04
Are you familiar with the five love languages? You may have heard of the book – even joked about how food or naps are your love language, but there are some very compelling aspects to this framework that are applicable to both your personal and professional life. In this resource share, we highlight The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace by Paul White, PhD.
What are the 5 love languages?
The core tenet is that every person experiences love through these languages, but each individual gravitates toward one or two more than the others. In no particular order, they are:
- Words of affirmation
- Acts of service
- Quality time
- Gifts
- Physical touch
As an example, Evelyn (Growth/Marketing) experiences great joy through finding and putting together meaningful gifts for friends and family. It’s a way of showing others that you’re thinking of them often – especially her nieces. Evelyn says, “When kids are young, growth stages happen so fast and it’s important to help them feel seen with so many demands on their attention. Also, who doesn’t love receiving gifts?”

Paul White, PhD is the co-author of The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace
Dr. Gary Chapman, PhD wrote the 1992 book The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts within the context of romantic relationships. Since we spend so much of our waking hours at work, Dr. Paul White, PhD adapted these concepts into The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace. This is a timely discussion for hybrid and remote teams who want to maintain a healthy organizational culture, employee-manager relationships, and creating trust. Additionally, Dr. Paul’s organization, Appreciation at Work, delivers research and polls to help employees reduce burnout and improve job satisfaction.
Speaking of Dr. Paul, he graciously sat down with Evelyn for the Building Culture podcast. Although the interview is a few years old, the core principles remain the same. You can listen to both episodes here:
